In a movie set in the 1890s, the daughter of the wealthy Kortesuo estate, Anna-Liisa, falls in love with Johannes from the Kivimaa family. She reluctantly accepts his proposal because she fears the revelation of her past crime. Husso, the wife of a tenant farmer, threatens to expose the young bride's past with her son Mikko.
