When publican Gansendonck comes into money by inheritance, the boorish bourgeois eagerly spends to join the town's 'high society', trying to adopt or at least imitate their lifestyle. To his son's horror, Sir now disapproves of his 'commoner' true lover as prospective daughter in law, determined instead to match the knave to the baron's daughter. The aristocrats rude rejection of such a class mismatch turns it all hostile and tragic.
