A dramatic film about the suffering caused by the Bolsheviks to the Russian people and especially to the family of the war correspondent Hruleff. The colonel's student son Nikolai falls in love with the family's housemaid Polinka, who becomes attached to her young admirer and, after being promoted to commissar, tries to talk the boy over to the side of the Bolsheviks. Nikolai's sister Natasha loses her zest for life after many losses.
