On October 2, 2022, Brazil will hold the first round of a high-tension presidential election between the right-wing populist incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and the left-wing ex-president Lula da Silva: a confrontation that should have already taken place in the 2018 elections if Lula had not been convicted and imprisoned shortly before. The anti-corruption trial that brought down the two-term president went down in history as Operation Lava Jato ("Express Washing") and turned the country upside down from 2014 to 2021. But in 2019, while many high-level political and economic officials are being grilled, explosive revelations from the investigative website The Intercept Brasil turn the tables. They show that 'Lava Jato' was an inherently corrupt anti-corruption trial.
