"Othon," the play by Pierre Corneille (1664), recounts the end of the short reign of Galba, the Roman emperor and a weak old man entirely under the influence of his three favorites: Lacus, Martian, and Vinius. Othon had planned to marry Plautine, the daughter of Vinius, whom he loves. But Vinius urges him instead to seek the hand of Galba's daughter, Camille, in order to become the successor to the empire.
