For the first time in thirty-six years, Italy has been named guest of honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair. As soon as the news was announced, over forty of the authors invited expressed their unease in a letter to Jürgen Boos, director of this international event. And with good reason: this decision comes against a backdrop of increasing interference in the arts by Giorgia Meloni's ultraconservative government, which openly claims to be fighting against the alleged cultural hegemony of the Left. At a time when writer Roberto Saviano has been excluded from the Italian delegation, concerns are being raised about the respect and maintenance of freedom of expression.
