In May 1974, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing became President of the Republic and sought to usher in a new era of modernity. One of his first decisions was to break up the ORTF, leading to the creation of three new television channels: TF1, Antenne 2, and FR3. These were three new public channels, but autonomous and in competition with each other. A race for ratings began, and from then on, the channels would go to war with one another. This competition gave rise to a true golden age of television programming, with variety shows taking center stage. Music stars would soon fill the living rooms of the French public.
