While the history of the Mongols has often been written by their enemies, Genghis Khan, the legendary emperor (circa 1160-1227) is revered in Mongolia. Beyond the conquests achieved by his vanguard army of nomads, which mixed men and women of all social classes, this genius strategist, follower of shamanism, was able to convince rival tribes of the steppe to unite their destiny, before extending his domination from China to Italy through Russia and Central Asia. On a territory four times the size of the Roman Empire, he and his successors, such as his grandson Kubilai, whose reign will mark the apogee of the dynasty, have never ceased to innovate in politics, religious openness, science and art, by crossing cultures.
