Denmark in the 17th century. Wild and untamed, Marie Grubbe grows up without a mother at the noble estate of Tjele. Her father, Erik, lives with Ane, a peasant woman who hates the noblewoman's daughter. To put an end to the constant quarrels, Grubbe takes his daughter to Copenhagen. Her cousin Rigitze is to raise the girl and prepare her for a career at court.
