In the center of the plot is the village, which is listed in secret documents as Degelen No. 27. We are talking about the Semipalatinsk test site, or rather, about the people who live near the test site. But they don't know what they're experiencing there. The action takes place in the early 60s. The inhabitants of a remote, God-forsaken village know nothing about nuclear explosions or radiation. Therefore, children are happy to look at the beautiful huge mushrooms that grow out of the ground and rush to heaven. They don't understand why people in the village are dying so quickly, why their parents and loved ones are dying. Leila was born in the village of Degelen in the Semipalatinsk region, where nuclear weapons were tested. When she was five years old, her father died of an unknown illness, and then her mother.
