Tahiti, 1903. Doctor, poet, and artist Victor Segalen leaves France to meet Paul Gauguin in person on Hiva Oa. But upon his arrival on the island, he learns that the painter has already passed away. Inspired by Segalen's own notes, "Paradise and Wilderness" is a reflection on Gauguin's legacy, his contradictions, and the tense power relations between colonial rulers and the colonized.
