America leads the world in drug overdose deaths (64,000 in 2016 alone), and the most lethal and prolific among them are opioids. Women are prescribed more opioids than men and become addicted more easily. And when addicts become pregnant, recovery becomes a family affair. 'Original Body of Pain' documents the struggle of two families facing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome - when babies are born exposed to opioid drugs and must withdraw from them. Lisa, 25, is pregnant with her son Mavricc when she endures a heroin overdose in her second trimester, causing her to fear for her son's health, cognitive development and whether she'll be able to take him home with her once he's born. The film also depicts mother-of-three Ashley's journey to reclaim her life and keep her addiction at bay. Meanwhile, neonatal nurse Joanna struggles to make a dent in a community with an unrelenting demand for her help.
