The action begins in 1871, when German troops occupied Rouen during the Franco-Prussian War. Elisabeth Rousset, nicknamed "Cheese," a prostitute from a Rouen brothel, sends a passenger to see her daughter. The stagecoach journey with a large group of city citizens is significantly delayed due to the war. In one of the towns, the passenger is detained by a Prussian officer. He harasses Cheese and seduces her; only then does he allow the entire group to continue on their journey.
