Christiane's love for Arnaud, a married artist, has an unfavorable effect on the courtship of their brother, Max, with a wealthy heiress; furious with his younger daughter, the count is taken to task by Odette for pawning the house furnishings to support his mistress. The artist's wife finally agrees to a divorce, paving the way for Christiane's marriage and for the union of Odette with the family lawyer, who has loved her for years. De Maigny finds consolation with his mistress.
