A messenger brings news of disaster: nomads from the south are invading Rus'. Kolovrat, the Ryazan prince, and the people resolve at a meeting to fight rather than become slaves. Several battles take place, in which the Mongols suffer heavy losses, but they manage to first wound a hero and then burn Ryazan.
