Sérgio Oliveira (1960–2026) was a prominent Brazilian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer from Pernambuco, recognized as a key figure in contemporary Brazilian cinema. Born in Caruaru, he developed a career defined by aesthetic experimentation and a deep connection to Northeastern roots, often collaborating with director Renata Pinheiro through their production company, Aroma Filmes. His most notable works include the documentary Estradeiros (2011), which won Best Film from the Brazilian Film Critics Association (Abracine), and the fiction feature Açúcar (2017). As a screenwriter and producer, he was instrumental in award-winning films such as Amor, Plástico e Barulho (2013) and King Car (Carro Rei, 2021), which won the top prize at the Gramado Film Festival. Oliveira passed away in Rio de Janeiro at age 65 due to complications from hemorrhagic dengue, leaving behind a legacy of cultural innovation and resistance in the national audiovisual scene.
