1982 FIFA World Cup Spain
Group 2: Algeria vs Austria
S1 • E22 Jun 21, 1982
The football match between West Germany and Austria took place on June 25, 1982, in Gijón, Spain, during the 1982 World Cup. Called the "match of shame", it is known in German as the "Nichtangriffspakt von Gijón" (the non-aggression pact of Gijón) or "Schande von Gijón" (the shame of Gijón). It was a first-round match between two teams from Group 2. It was nicknamed the "match of shame" because its result was questioned by many observers, some alleging a deal between the two teams to ensure they both qualified for the second round of the World Cup at the expense of Algeria.
