Alika reads Dumi’s letter. Jendal sees Dumi receiving a note from Ladisa, Ngozi’s widow. Alika reports Dumi’s letter to her mother. Jendal has Akin arrested; he orders Dumi to throw him into the pit of serpents at dawn. Dumi and Akin are terrified. Alika and José negotiate the pawning of the jewelry with Diógenes, who is enchanted by the pieces. Dumi throws Akin into the pit of serpents.
