Having tied up Usoltseva, Surovtsev tells how everything was. Savitsky turned him in, but Surovtsev managed to convince the son of the leader that he was innocent of his father's death, and also staged the execution so that no one would look for Surovtsev. Later, he killed Savitsky for turning him in, and his son along with his accomplices. Suvorovtsev offers Usoltseva a deal: she gives Aksentyev away, and he will leave her alive. Usoltseva refuses and Surovtsev begins to torture her, hoping to break her, but in vain. Suddenly, Aksentyev rings the doorbell: he came to apologize. Surovtsev loses his vigilance, thinking that the goal has been achieved, Usoltseva attacks him, and in a desperate fight she manages to win. But a new nightmare immediately falls on her: Aksentyev sees that Usoltseva will be killed by a Water Man. He will bring you to the river and drown you. But next to her, apart from Aksentyev, only her colleague Kukharenko. Is he really a Merman? Usoltseva is looking for confirmation of this and understands that this is most likely the case. And although Kukharenko denies this, he is categorically against Aksentyev touching him to confirm the truthfulness of his words. This finally leads Usoltseva to believe that Kukharenko is the famous maniac. She arrests him and goes to Dolgov, intending to have a confrontation between them. Meanwhile, we learn that many years ago Derzhavin investigated the causes of the tragedy that happened in the camp and asked everyone involved to report if there was any news. And now the class teacher informs Derzhavin that Aksentyev is alive. Derzhavin finds out that Aksentyev is in the department and demands to detain him. During the detention, Aksentyev resists, is stunned and thrown into the same cell where Kukharenko is sitting.
