Tuur was already disheartened, but at their return the quartet finds all almost all their things burned to a crisp. Sam gets a suspicious welcome but is ultimately recognized from the painting as their fifth fellow as archery descendant, and indeed his presence enables the book again to reveal the next instructions. Sam shows them the pool, reveals where the golden arrow is hidden and tries to retrieve it from the blacksmith's home, to which end he tricks the fiend in assuming a fly's shape so he can be trapped in a bottle. The five find out Sam is the best archer. The fly is carelessly released and chases them transformed back, but distracted by visitors. Arne devises a scary trick so they can finally perform the ritual, the conjunction night having arrived. But the fiend wasn't fooled and traps them in a fire circle.
