Commissioner Scalise, unconscious on the ground after being hit by Saro, is rushed to the hospital, it would seem all lost for Giovanna and the child she is carrying... but a bulletproof vest, which the commissioner has decided to wear all the time since she knew she was pregnant, has worked a miracle. Manrico, to the amazement and anger of his colleagues and friends, is stopped and interrogated by the DIA as a presumed accomplice of the attacker.
Vito Tonnara advises Saro to disappear from circulation for a while, Saro is terrified of what he has done. Giovanna leaves the hospital as soon as she recovers to go to the DIA and intervene in defense of Manrico. To everyone's amazement she declares that Manrico cannot be guilty of complicity in the attack because he is the father of her child. Manrico is speechless.
