The 2017 Eurovision Song Contest took place in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. The right to host came after Jamala won the 2016 edition in Stockholm with her song '1944'. It was Kyiv's second time hosting the main contest, having previously done so in 2005.
42 countries competed, including Romania and Portugal, who returned to the competition after a year’s absence. The contest was a special one for Austria, Denmark, and the United Kingdom, which all celebrated the 60th anniversary of their first participation in 1957.
Kyiv was announced as the host city after a competitive bid process against five other cities. The decision was made to stage the contest at the International Exhibition Centre, which had a capacity of up to 11,000 spectators.
