"Faces of Islam" is a documentary journey of discovery into the world of 1.4 billion Muslims. The elaborate series leads to people who practice Islam as a religion and way of life, who understand and want to modernize it as a world view and social force. It leads to places of its history and to everyday life - from mosques and markets to schools, workshops and music studios. In countries as diverse as Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, Turkey and Egypt, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Iran and Morocco. In encounters, in interviews and in commentary, the four films ask important questions about current aspects of Islam: What do Muslims believe in? How do religion and tradition shape their everyday life? How do the roles of men and women and the importance of the family develop? How do the peaceful and violent aspects of the faith work in the Islamic world? And how open are Islamic societies to progress?
