The relationship between Manjou and Elisabeth is put to the test. Is the otherwise level-headed Mrs. Meinhart doing the right thing, or is she doing Manjou a bitter injustice? Despite all his efforts, Daniel is unable to make contact with Lukas, who rejects him brusquely. Daniel considers him to be an unreliable and baseless drifter. Only Manjou has the impression that there is a sensitive core behind the boy's hard shell.
