A grown woman falls from a tree in the middle of the forest and breaks her neck. Who climbs trees at that age? Hubert and Staller are skeptical and initially investigate forester Gerd Binsig, who is overly aggressively patrolling the adjacent bird sanctuary. Did he, in a fit of rage, chase and kill a dog owner who had wandered into the sanctuary, or is this a case of poaching? The forester, however, vehemently denies this, and the dead woman, with Asian features and carrying nothing but a wedding ring, remains unidentified. Dr. Anja Licht determines that the dead woman must have fallen from a great height. The police sergeants are perplexed: Who is the woman, why is no one missing her, and where did she fall from if not the tree under which she was found? Hubert and Staller actively investigate in all directions, and soon the bird sanctuary looks as if it had been the scene of a military exercise. While Staller endures a sightseeing flight in a biplane to search for clues, his colleague Riedl frantically combs the forest. Only when Dr. Licht notices something wrong with the dead woman's wedding ring does the case seem to take an unexpected turn. The investigation focuses on flight school director Michael Kronthaler and his father, who had just returned from vacation. The Mendler couple, who run a balloon company and regularly fly tourists over Bavaria, are also suspected. Girwidz is growing impatient because the dead woman's identity cannot be established, and then his wife's silver wedding anniversary present is delivered incorrectly. Luckily, Sonja Wirth has an idea how Girwidz can save his celebration. But soon it seems as if she and Riedl have driven the district manager straight into the arms of the potential perpetrator.
