The Alps drop steeply into the sea: a strange but dreamy landscape, olive groves, mountain villages and fishermen. This is Liguria. Further south, in Tuscany, it becomes softer and sweeter. In Campania it simmers underground, around Vesuvius there are ancient sites and fertile farming areas. The Italian coastline is as varied as hardly any other region in Europe
