Rio Platano is the largest biosphere reserve in Central America. Its marsh and tropical rainforest ecosystems are home to a large number of animal and plant species. In 1982, Unesco inscribed these natural resources on the list of world heritage of mankind. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Most of its population lives on agriculture and logging. But the massive cutting of timber in all the country's forests has dried up the land. To escape the misery of their region of origin, many peasants came to settle in the Rio Platano Reserve, where they began to clear the forest to cultivate, result: in 1996, Unesco registered Rio Platano on the list of endangered world heritage.
