Chronicles of a sacrificed lake

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, 95% of the hippo populations have been destroyed by poaching since 1994. The traditional ecosystem of the animal is located in the Great Lakes region, epicenter of terrible wars since 1994 and the Rwandan genocide. The peace theoretically signed in 2003 does not correspond to reality: the province of Kivu does not yet have security, the management of resources is spiraling out of control. In such a context, nature conservation can be a stabilizing factor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A striking case is given to us by the situation of Lake Edward included in the Virunga National Park. Here the gradual disappearance of the populations of hippos leads to a destabilization of the fishing companies which border the lake. Better management of natural resources may be able to secure the region against new conflicts and help consolidate peace.
