The East Coast watched the ending in which Wallace lived and the West Coast watched the ending in which she died. After the episode aired, viewers were encouraged to vote on NBC's website, where they could view both endings. Viewers voted to let her live, and thus the episode in which Wallace lives is considered the only official version by NBC. This is the alternate ending.
