Ten years ago, Granin's life changed dramatically when he was seriously wounded while saving his friend and partner Yura Dymov. While he was in the hospital, his wife Mariya left for Dymov and took their eight-year-old daughter Olesya with her. Disillusioned with his family and people in general, Granin leaves for a remote village, where he becomes a forest protection inspector and in his new place, for his unsociability, he gets the nickname Leshiy.
