The police chief in a small town 100 miles north of Los Angeles asks Joe Mannix to come to the town to assist him. Another old friend of Joe's, Paul Parish, whom Joe convinced the chief to hire after Parish had been in prison for a crime he didn't commit, is now suspected of killing his former cell mate from San Quentin and stealing $150,000 in cash that the cell mate had hidden before going to prison.
