Animal psychologist Martin Rütter meets people in animal protection facilities throughout Germany in order to be able to experience their work. Rütter is accompanied on his reporting trip to the various animal shelters by the trainers Ellen Marques and Sophie Grethe as well as trainer Marcel Wunderlich. When selecting the animal shelters to be portrayed, Rütter and his team paid particular attention to their concept, which had to convince the makers. An example of this is an animal shelter in Darmstadt, where the “Underdog” project enables people without a permanent address to have their animals cared for or treated. Martin Rütter encountered not only dogs, but also cats, birds, sheep - and even two tigers that were once rescued from private keeping and from circus training.
