The three conspirators, Mathias Sandorf, Etienne Bathory, and Count Zathmar, are imprisoned on the island of Tabor. Betrayed by Sarcany and the banker Thorontal, they await death in the fortress of Tisino. With nothing left to lose, Mathias decides to escape, which he manages to do, thanks to his tenacity and the help of a mysterious cellmate.
