Although Mon's mother warmly welcomed him back, she is distressed at the thought of losing a financier and gaining another mouth to feed. She begins to probe into Olive's flaws until she discovers a scandalous secret. Mon and Olive eventually learn that they escaped war only to find themselves entangled in an emotional battlefield.
