Becoming Somebody: Building Self Esteem for our GirlsFor too long, women of color, and their daughters, have been held back and marginalized by a society that undervalues both their contributions and their potential. The Rhosebud (pronounced rose buds) Club is an affiliate group of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority consisting of a diverse group of girls ages 8-11. Delicate like a rosebud, this affiliate group is handled with special care and attention. The Rhosebud Club reaches out to these young women showing them the importance of self-esteem, making strong, lasting friendships, and examine opportunities for young women of color. In this episode of MI Healthy Mind, we meet two extraordinary young ladies and their moms who are part of this groundbreaking program designed to "grow" strong, confident, capable young women. They tell us all about experiences in Rhoseuds and Rhoers(pronounced rowers), that are helping them with feelings of self-esteem and how being part of a larger community can open opportunities for their future. The Rhoer affiliates are working to help other young people while they learn about their heritage and develop leadership skills. Sigma Gamma Rho is dedicated to helping Rhoers grow to be women of substance who are dedicated to service. - Turning Away from ViolenceE7
Turning Away from ViolenceRevenge, Retaliation, Retribution. Feelings we have when we have been wronged. They are primal, unstoppable, even biblical. On this episode of MI HEALTHY MIND, we talk with a survivor of gun violence, who realized that retaliation was a cycle that had to be broken, for himself, his kids and his community. Roger Roper now works to help break this cycle with the Washtenaw County Sherrif's Department Community Violence Intervention program "WeLive" to help his community recover and heal from violent crimes. In Addition, Derrick Jackson, Director of the Community Engagement programs in Washtenaw County talks about the "WeLive" program and how peer to peer counselling helps victims of violent crimes and their families move on without retaliation.
