In this WDR documentary series, Armin Maiwald, filmmaker and chief commentator of the "Sendung mit der Maus" (The Mouse Show), embarks on a journey of discovery through Germany with a small team, introducing local and regional peculiarities and occasionally delving deep into history. Whether on foot, by bike, by car, train, or boat, Maiwald follows the course of the Elbe River from its source to its mouth or the "Hiking Trail of German Unity," visits Germany's most stork-rich village, visits one of the last active coal mines in the Ruhr region, uncovers medieval secrets at Eisenach's Wartburg Castle, encounters rare eagle owls in the Eifel region, and goes gold prospecting in Thuringia.

What was his own childhood like? For the first time in a long time, Armin Maiwald is revisiting the Bavarian village of Uffing. He spent six years there, from 1945 to 1951, together with his mother and sister. How has the small community on Lake Staffelsee changed? And will Armin even manage to meet some familiar faces from back then? The visit to his Bavarian "exile" brings back many memories for Armin-not all of them pleasant.
