Finn Kiesewetter, Lars Englen, and their colleagues from the Lübeck Criminal Investigation Department are called to the scene of a body being discovered in the remote Lauer Holz forest. Family man Andreas Overbeck died from a gunshot wound to the head; everything looks like a suicide. But two bullets are missing from the murder weapon. And his wife Jana and their son Matthis have disappeared without a trace. Did Overbeck do something to his family? Lars remembers the man - the well-known choleric worked in Lübeck's robbery department until his suspension. Neighbor Sigrid Grothius reports of Overbeck's pathological jealousy, loud arguments with his wife, and severe abuse. The elderly woman is behaving increasingly strangely and is noticeably overzealous in asking about clues and a suicide note found in Overbeck's uncle's old hunting lodge. And her son Klaus, a psychologist with whom the couple was undergoing treatment for marital problems, is also behaving suspiciously. While the search for Jana and Matthis is in full swing, investigators discover that Mrs. Grothius also suffered from her husband's domestic violence-until his death. But what do she and her son have to do with the Overbeck case?
