1979 NASCAR Winston Cup Series
The NASCAR Cup Series is the top series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. The series began in 1949 as the Strictly Stock Division, from 1950 to 1970 was known as the Grand National Division, then NASCAR Winston Cup Series (1971–2003), then NASCAR Nextel Cup Series (2004–2007), followed by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (2008–2016) and finally the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (2017–2019). NASCAR subsequently moved to tiered sponsorship in 2020 named the NASCAR Cup Series.

Daytona 500The 1979 Daytona 500, the 21st annual running of the event, was the second race of the 1979 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. It was held on February 18, 1979 at Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida. It has been called the most important race in stock car history. The race was televised live "flag-to-flag," a rarity in the era, and the first for a 500-mile race in the United States. Camera angles such as the "in-car" view were introduced to viewers from all over the United States.
