Free Land - 150th Anniversary of Homesteading

The Lure of The Land - The Homestead Act of 1862 triggered one of the largest migrations in history, bringing immigrants from all over the world, U.S. citizens and even recently freed slaves to claim free land on the western Plains of the United States. Looking for Bliss - A look back at a mysterious African-American settlement near Goose Lake in Nebraska, now long gone, where a group of former slaves tried to make a living on some of the least productive land in the Sandhills. A Plague of Locusts - Experience the devastation locusts wrought on the Great Plains in 1874. Visualized with animation based on an eyewitness account written by a reporter who was visiting friends on their Nebraska homestead during the attack. Our Daily Bread - Flour mills played a critical role in the settlement of the Great Plains. In this story, we explore the history of flour mills in Nebraska and visit a family owned mill that's still in operation today. Just Like The Old Country - On July 10, 1987 Wilber, Nebraska was declared the official "Czech Capital of the USA." Every year in August the little town hosts an annual Czech festival that embraces the cultural traditions of the Old Country.
