Pickpockets have intensified on Nevskiy Prospekt, Arsenyev sends Semyonov to "free search." Every evening, Pasha is obliged to submit a report on the work done to him. But, according to an evil irony of fate, Arsenyev himself is a victim of a thief - in a matter of seconds he remains without a service certificate and service weapon. In the morning, two corpses are found by patrolmen - both men are killed with Arsenyev's pistol.
