Rémi (or Remi) and the group walk many miles aiming to arrive to a commune called Ussel. Being still two thirds of the distance away, Vitalis advises Remi to try to save his energies the most he can. While passing through a mountain forest, they are caught by a heavy rain. Mr. Vitalis covers Rémi with his Cape and says he will have to buy him one of his own. He says that they'd maybe not find a place to pass the night in the mountains.
