Stress and worry are inherent to illness, whether real or imagined. No matter what department they work in, doctors spend considerable time easing their patients' anxiety and reassuring them. They do this in different ways, by giving rational explanations, taking charge, offering them a clear treatment plan, and sometimes even just making them laugh.
