When Mr Crossley loses some money in a pub, it seems obvious to DC Radley that Tom Wilkins, seen with him immediately before, is the thief. Parkin is not so sure and delays seeing Wilkins, but are his doubts caused by scepticism over Crossley's account or friendship between Parkin and his wife and the Wilkins, living in the same village? He eventually has no choice but to confront Wilkins when the evidence against him mounts up.
