The theft of a painting from Colonel Mannering's house results in an expert from Scotland Yard, Chief Inspector Mitchum, being called in to assist. A missing illustration in a library book suggests someone local had taken an interest in the painting, and while Mitchum makes his own enquiries he leaves Parkin to visit the Colonel. It is Parkin's friendly questioning of Mannering that gives them a lead on visitors to the house.
