Shortly before closing time, greengrocer Alfons Wegener is the victim of a brutal robbery. A short time later, he is found dead in his shop, the cash register empty. The criminal investigation department is making slow progress in its investigation. What is certain is that a final customer had been in his shop shortly before, and that the perpetrator knew Wegener, as the two had previously shared a beer there. Initially, Wegener's stepson is suspected; he recently moved out after heated, sometimes physical, arguments with his choleric stepfather. But Wegener's widow, who is rather relieved to hear that her marriage is over, also has to put up with uncomfortable questions from Inspector Grawe. But the most important witness has not yet come forward: the final customer.
