A safe is broken into at an auto repair shop, and 8,000 marks are stolen. Suspicion initially falls on a young auto mechanic who picked up his girlfriend, who works at the same shop, on the night of the theft. This suspicion is strengthened when the police discover that the suspect was involved in an accident with a customer's vehicle, resulting in significant material damage. This suspicion is contradicted by the statement of a worker who claims to have seen a customer service employee near the shop premises at the time of the crime. However, a reconstruction of events then leads to this worker himself becoming a suspect.
