Shunting master Jochen Schober lives with Eva Rickelmann. After a serious shunting accident of his own making, he has lost his position, as well as his social and moral stability. Harsh toward his fellow men, addicted to alcohol, and unstable, he earns his money as a casual laborer in the coal trade and allows himself to be seduced into theft by his friend Spiering. His love for Eva motivates Schober once again to try honest work. He wants to report the thefts they committed together. However, the confrontation with the man who exploits his helplessness ends fatally for Jochen Schober.
