Perestroika. Nadezhda, the daughter of legendary journalist Boris Keller, learns of his death. During the funeral, Nadezhda points out how many of his fellow countrymen died at a young age. The locals refer to the atomic bombing exercises that took place in Totskoe in 1954. Nadya realizes that she must bring the truth about Totskoe to the people and continue her father's investigation.
