Popstars (GB)

Specials

Popstars is a UK talent show series that was broadcast on ITV in early 2001. It was the first UK series of the international Popstars franchise, and was billed as a documentary on the formation of a modern pop group. The series began with audition rounds of aspiring singers performing songs before a panel of judges. The best performers were selected to come to London for further rounds of auditions. Over the weeks, the judges eliminated various singers from the auditions until just a few singers were left in contention. In the final weeks, five contestants were chosen by the judges to form the new pop group Hear’Say. The programme then showed the group recording and promoting their first single, documenting their first ventures into the music industry.

The first series of Popstars proved popular with audiences, and a second series followed in 2002.

Hear'Say: Live in ManchesterThe rise of Hear’Say, the winner of ITV1’s 2001 series PopStars, has been phenomenal to say the least. As Hear’Say Live documents, despite being together only nine months and having just two hit singles, the group accomplished the unthinkable--a dazzling, all-singing, all dancing, sell-out UK arena tour. Kicking off with a thrilling James-Bond-style opening sequence the group descend via ropes on to the stage. Despite being a slickly choreographed affair, the concert appears to be hindered by the audience’s general lack of familiarity with the material. This is further emphasised by the highlights of the concert being the solo, cover performances given by each band member--"Chains" (Mylene); "I Found Lovin'" (Danny); "How Do I Live" (Kym); "Never Too Much" (Noel) and Suzanne’s excellent version of Madonna’s "Express Yourself". Although their second album Everybody was released just two months after the featured live concert, the show fails to include any material from this release.
