In Florence, on April 11, 1584, the influential Medici family wanted to marry their daughter to Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga. His marriage to the Duchess of Mantua had remained childless. To be on the safe side, Vincenzo's future in-laws demanded a "love test": he was to prove his manhood to a virgin in front of a select audience.
